Is it Jewelry, or is it Art?
What is your definition of jewelry? Is it some shiny ring you can wear? What is your definition of art? Is it something you pay money to look at in a climate-controlled building? Can you separate the two ideas? Can jewelry be art? Can art be jewelry? When something is handmade or bespoke, or when it’s a one (or two?) of a kind piece, the lines between jewelry and art can blur. Hand-made jewelry usually involves using a more personal touch, especially if you have it custom-made. Like a painting or sculpting, the artist can put more of themselves into their pieces. But then the same can be said of hand-made arts and crafts. Maybe the lines blur because of purpose. Is it art because it’s a watercolor painting, or a carving made from onyx stone. So then what of a bracelet made with silver beads and onyx stones? Or wood, hematite, or jade? Nice to look at, but you could also match the colors to your watch or outfit.
